I’ve divided this page into a number of categories.
First, I’m listing some of the books that are required reading for the students of the Foundations of Colon Hydrotherapy Program. Next, I’m listing suggested reading for the same program. And then I list additional books. Although the required and suggested reading books are for the students, they are books that are educational for anyone interested in furthering their knowledge of the body and the intestines. Dr. Jensen's Guide to Better Bowel Care: A Complete Program for Tissue Cleansing Through Bowel Management by Bernard Jensen Jensen was around when I began my diet and cleansing changes back in the seventies. His pictures of what comes out when you cleanse are legendary! A pioneer in diet, nutrition, cleansing and iridology.

The Second Brain: A Groundbreaking New Understanding of Nervous Disorders of the Stomach and Intestines by Michael D Gerson. The gut has its own brain and how that affects us. For example, inflammation in one part of the gut may affect distant parts.

Unwinding the Belly: Healing with Gentle Touch by Allison Post, Stephen Cavaliere Self-help care for releasing tension in the abdomen and much more. Chi Nei Tsang-based.

Healing from Within With Chi Nei Tsang: Applied Chi Kung in Internal Organs Treatment by Gilles Marin, Michele Chase, and Mantak Chia I took a few seminars in Chi Nei Tsang and found it outstanding. The core is the abdomen and intestines, a crossroads for health. It includes breathing, meditation, visualization, exercises and abdominal massage.

Breaking the Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health Through Diet Millennium Edition by Elaine Gloria Gottschall. Groundbreaking research and practice on the effect of sugars on the gut wall. Mainly for inflammatory bowel disease however covers a host of other conditions, some of which appear initially unrelated to the gut like depression, autism, abnormal behavior, abnormal brain behavior, lupus,arthritis and thyroid deficiency. This book reflects my dietary bias.

Clear Your Clutter With Feng Shui by Karen Kingston. Karen Kingston is a Feng Shui practitioner who has a popular book on getting rid of clutter in your life. She has a chapter devoted to colon cleansing, ridding your body of clutter. Dr. Christopher's program is recommended by Kingston.

The Cure For All Advanced Cancers by Dr. Hulda Regehr Clark PhD Dr Clark attributes all disease to parasites and pollutants. She uses electronic medicine in the form of a zapper to 'zap' parasites. Her book includes cleanses of the liver, gall bladder, kidneys and intestines. Any of her other books are worth reading.

Your Body's Many Cries for Water by Fereydoon Batmanghelidj MD So many clients I see are dehydrated. This doctor will inspire you to drink water for your health and life.

Additional Reading

The Ph Miracle: Balance Your Diet; Reclaim Your Health by Robert Young. This book gives insight on our pH or the alkalinity/acidity of our body.

Colon Health Handbook: New Health Through Colon Rejuvenation by Robert Gray This book was our main text in Miami in the 70's and 80's on cleansing and rejuvenating the intestines. Gray outlines the psyllium and bentonite cleanse. He includes insights into the functioning, cleansing and restoring of the lymph system.

Edgar Cayce's Guide to Colon Care: The First Step to Vibrant Health by Sandra Duggan RN Duggan worked with the ARE (Association for Research and Enlightenment) over 20 years as teacher and practitioner of colon hydrotherapy and Cayce Remedies. Her book includes info on Cayce's contribution to intestinal health, her insights, diet, fasting, enema additives, colon hydrotherapy, exercises, castor oil packs, conditions, homeopathy and resources.

The Paleo Diet: Lose Weight and Get Healthy by Eating the Food You Were Designed to Eat by Loren Cordain A good researcher gives his diet theory which is close to the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (Gottschall) however excludes beans and dairy.

Natural Therapy for Your Liver: Herbs and Other Natural Remedies for a Healthy Liver
by Christopher Hobbs Hobbs does some consummate herb work on liver and digesion.

Detoxification: All You Need to Know to Recharge, Renew and Rejuvenate Your Body, Mind and Spirit by Linda Page ND My clients love this one.

Ayurveda: Science of Self-Healing by Vasant D. Lad Lad visited my office in Tucson in 1988 to give readings and that was my first contact. He is the director of the Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque NM where people can go for study, treatment and residential cleansing programs. You'll get an overview of India's ancient medicine and an explanation of their cleansing system called panchakarma.

Nutrition and Physical Degeneration by Weston A. Price Price writes on the politics of food and knows that the farther we get away from nature in our nutrition the more likely we are to be ill. Price believes modern denatured food is THE major cause of the degenerative diseases and the overall poor health of our society.

Digestive Wellness by Elizabeth Lipski A good primer on intestinal health with anatomy/physiology, microbes, leaky gut, testing, detoxing, diet, skills for developing 'emotional hardiness,' therapies for gut problems and related disorders and resources.

Guess What Came to Dinner: Parasites and Your Health by Ann Louise Gittleman I met Gittleman in 1995 at the annual meeting of the International Association for Colon Hydrotherapy. She gave an excellent talk and was friendly and accessible to us for questions and exchange. Her work on parasites is an easy read, comprehensive and first class.

Prostate Health in 90 Days: Cure Your Prostate Now Without Drugs or Surgery by Larry Clapp PhD A client said Clapp's book has the best chapter on intestinal health. The Master Cleanse is one of his suggestions for intestinal health that keys into prostate health. Clapp healed himself naturally of prostate cancer. He also includes the emotional, mental, sexual and spiritual realms in his healing.

Tao of Health, Sex And Longevity: A Modern Practical Guide to the Ancient Way by Daniel P. Reid Chapter 2 is on Fasting and Excretion.

Sinus Survival: The Wholistic Medical Treatment for Sinus, Allergies and Colds by Robert Ivker DO. The Ivker book is helpful because it explains things you can do to reduce symptoms and environmental exposure risks as well as treatment options.

The Biodynamic Philosophy and Treatment of Psychosomatic Conditions by Peg Nunneley Vol. I. A very esoteric book however it deals with the emotional and psychological aspects of the intestines.

Invisible Illnesses by Gloria Gilbere ND. Dr Gilbere addresses in her 2 books the chronic fatigue, prescription addiction and other illnesses that are real and yet overlooked. Protocols are given. Colon hydrotherapy is foundational.

3 Days to Vitality: Cleanse Your Body, Clear Your Mind, Claim Your Spirit by Pamela Serure, Donna Karan A client followed the program after Thanksgiving last year and found it a successful and peaceful way to restore. She said there were so many suggestions for taking care of oneself while fasting that she couldn't possibly do all of them.

The Complete Book of Enzyme Therapy by Dr. Anthony J. Cichoke This book is divided into three parts. Part one gives a clear picture of enzymes: what they are, what they do, and how they can be depleted in our food and our body. Part 2 explains how enzyme therapy can be used for the treatment of over 150 disorders. Part three presents complementary therapies that can be incorporated into your enzyme treatment program.

Optimal Digestion: New Strategies for Achieving Digestive Health edited by Trent Nichols. A team of physicians and healthcare professionals contribute their articles.

Wellness Against All Odds by Sherry Rogers MD She has an excellent protocol for all the cleanses; the coffee enema, raw juices etc. Check Dr Roger's other books too.

Get Into Movement The Complete Book of Abs by Kurt Brungardt. OK, let's get out there and build our abs! He has one on butts and legs, too!

Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution by Robert C. Atkins. Atkins' program was originally designed for overweight and then it worked well for cholesterol, heart disease and diabetes. Great reading, humorous. Atkins' understands our food addiction foibles, why we experiencehunger, cravings andfatigue and how the high protein fat diet reduce and end them.

Life without Bread: How a Low Carbohydrate Diet Can Save Your Life by Wolfgang Lutz

The Vegetarian Guide to Diet and Salad by Dr Norman W Walker. Any book you can get your hands on of Walker's, go for it. Colon Health: Key to a Vibrant Life is famous. I read all 8back in the '70's! He died at the age of 118 while working on his roof in Glendale AZ!

Food Is Your Best Medicine by Henry Bieler MD. I read this in 1975 and find it very enlightening. He has an explanation for the cause of polio outbreaks.

Lost for Words: The Psychoanalysis of Anorexia and Bulimia by Em Forster. This small book gave me the biggest insight into my eating disorders.

The Way of Herbs: Fully Updated With the Latest Developments in Herbal Science by Michael Tierra Tierra is the herbalist that informs us of the Chinese approach to herbs. He has expanded to Ayurvedic and American too.

Back To Eden by Jethro Kloss The book is a comprehensive timeless classic. As the covers says, the classic guide to herbal medicine, natural foods and home remedies since 1939! Sections deal with baths and water treatments handy at home, compresses and fomentations, how to take and give enemas. He gives simple reminders of what we can dofor ourselves.

Visceral Manipulation by Jean-Pierre Barral, Pierre Mercier These books are based on osteopathy and are excellent for practitioners working on the abdomen.

Fruits of Warm Climates by Julia F. Morton. This is the ultimate fruit book, providing extensive information on common and uncommon fruits of warm climates. This book was alabor of love by its author, the world-renowned botanist, Julia F. Morton, who was with theUniversity of Miami, in Florida. I met Dr Morton in Miami FL at one of her excellent lectures.

Permaculture: A Designer's Manual by Bill Mollison. Superior book on permaculture.

Landscape Plants for Dry Regions: More Than 600 Species From Around the World by Warren Jones and Charles Sacamano

Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats by Sally Fallon, Mary G. Enig PhD.

Angel Foods: Healthy Recipes for Heavenly Bodies by Cherie Soria. The recipe book features both raw and cooked (transition) vegan recipes. The first chapter includes a section with the title, "Love is the Answer to Every Question". The remainder of the book provides an impressive collection of recipes including fermented foods.

The Raw Gourmet by Nomi Shannon Beautiful illustrations and a good recipe book for the raw fooders! Get new ideas, give parties!

Raw: The Uncook Book: New Vegetarian Food for Life by Juliano Brotman
Juliano has a great reputation from his restaurant in San Francisco and I certainly plan to have a copy of this book in my raw food collection.

Juicing for Life by Cherie Calbom, Maureen B. Keane It's always nice to have a raw juice book on hand for gaining the instant, nutritive and therapeutic effects of liquid fruits and vegetables. Many recipes and explanations for conditions.

The Cleanse Cookbook by Christine Dreher Christine is allied with the Cleanse and Purify Thyself cleanse by Rich Anderson. She has information on taking one's pH or acid-alkaline balance that I think is important for any cleanser to know. It determines whether you are ready to cleanse. Plus her dialogue and recipes help with the cleanse.
